The Mushroom

The Mushroom stands in the middle of Móricz Zsigmond Square. It used to be the terminus for suburban trains, however, it has changed functions more times over its 80-year-long history. Today it hosts cafés and a public transport ticket office.

The ring-shaped building nicknamed as ‘Mushroom’ was constructed in 1942 by the plans of József Schall. It soon became a popular attraction of South Buda at the time. Besides public transport services various shops also opened there.

As Móricz Zsigmond Square is one of the key intersections of the city, more tram lines, even a suburban train line crossed here. During the Revolution of ’56 the Mushroom was used as ammo depot.

By the 2000s the building had greatly deteriorated so a complete renovation was planned aiming to create a multifunctional facility. Renovation of the listed building ended in 2014 and it contains a café, a gallery and bistro as well as a public transport information center.

Large windows provide lots of natural light and make the building completely transparent. The sculpture made by László Szomor in 1930 entitled Fountainette in the middle of the circle was also renovated. After the construction works the Mushroom has become the home of Café “4 Street Coffee”, “Prosit Buda Bistro” gallery and bistro as well as a public transport ticket office and information center.
