20 Bertalan Lajos Street

20 Bertalan Lajos Street was built in 1904 by two brothers and a sister: Lajos János Finger, Gyula Finger and Róza Finger.

The tenancy building was designed by Imre Gondos, who designed some impressive memorials also. His imaginative style of making memorials is recognizable on the building as well. Both the facade and the interior are rich in decorative elements. The wavy motif is one of the distinctive features of the building.

The arrangement of each storey is identical from top to bottom. A 4-room flat overlooks Budafoki Street and the corner, two 3-room flats overlook Bertalan Lajos Street (except the ground floor apartment with 2 rooms due to the entrance).

Every apartment had a servant’s room implying that wealthy tenants were expected. The cellar was renovated in 1961 and plans specified shops downstairs and showed some functional changes. For example, the storage room in the cellar was turned to a garage.
